World Remains Far Behind 30-by-30 Biodiversity Target

Countries remain well short of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework target to conserve 30 percent of land and sea by 2030, according to research reported on 23 September 2026.

Current protection is about 20 percent of land and around 10 percent of marine areas. Existing commitments would raise marine protection to only about 12 percent by 2030, leaving a large gap against the 30 percent target.

The global biodiversity framework also includes a goal of mobilising US$200 billion per year for biodiversity from public and private sources, making finance and implementation central to closing the conservation gap.
