Nepal Faces Flood Reconstruction Bill Near One-Tenth of Its Economy
Nepal estimated that recovery and reconstruction after the late-August 2026 glacier-related floods could require roughly US$4–5 billion, an amount close to one-tenth of the country's economy, according to the finance minister.
A later government rapid assessment estimated recovery needs at Rs723.31 billion, with infrastructure accounting for about Rs473.57 billion, or roughly 75 percent of the total. Energy and road systems were among the hardest-hit assets.
The assessment identified impacts across 13 hydropower projects with a combined 759 MW capacity and five solar projects totalling 24 MW. On 23 September, the World Bank said up to US$170 million in emergency financing could be made available for Nepal's flood response and recovery.
