West Bengal Moves Ahead with Four Regional Airports Under UDAN
Rural Development Today | 5 October 2026 | Development Connects
West Bengal and the Union civil aviation establishment have moved forward with plans to develop four regional airports at Chharra in Purulia, Kalaikunda in Paschim Medinipur, Balurghat in Dakshin Dinajpur and Hasimara in Alipurduar.
An agreement for implementation of the regional-connectivity programme was signed on 5 October 2026. Regional airports can affect local economies through passenger movement, tourism, business travel and selected high-value freight, but physical infrastructure alone does not automatically produce those effects.
Operational routes and passenger demand will be critical. Regional aviation projects require commercially viable flight connections if they are to generate regular economic activity. The four locations serve different regional contexts, from western districts and tourism areas to the north Bengal–Dooars region.
Future monitoring should examine capital expenditure, project completion, routes sanctioned, flight frequency, passenger loads, ticket costs, local employment and commercial activity linked to each airport. Until operations begin, these remain infrastructure commitments rather than demonstrated development outcomes.
