Meghalaya Mobilises 100-km Cleanliness Drive from Nongpoh to Sohra
Meghalaya organised a large community cleanliness mobilisation on 2 October 2026 over an approximately 100-km stretch from Nongpoh to Sohra under Swachhata Hi Seva 2026. The drive, organised through the Directorate of Urban Affairs and Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), used the theme “Ek Din, Ek Saath, Ek Ghanta. ” Participation included students, colleges, Dorbar Shnongs, community organisations, departments, residents and other stakeholders.
The campaign was therefore more than a municipal cleaning exercise; it used a long public corridor to bring educational institutions, traditional community bodies and public agencies into one sanitation action. A logistics component was added through 24 vehicles, including 18 small vehicles and 6 trucks, for collection and transport. Current reporting also identified Jowai, Tura and Nongpoh among locations where scientific waste-management or landfill facilities are being considered or developed.
Meghalaya has been working on implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, including monitoring structures and district-level responsibilities. The 2026–27 budget also reported that more than 50% of legacy waste at Marten landfill in Shillong and Rongkhon Songgital in Tura had been remediated. The long-term value of the 100-km drive will depend on waste segregation, regular collection, processing rather than dumping, landfill-load reduction, school participation, Dorbar Shnong engagement and reduced roadside dumping along high-visibility corridors.
The corridor model is useful because waste movement often follows roads, markets, schools and tourist routes rather than administrative boundaries. By mobilising a continuous stretch, Meghalaya can test whether community awareness, collection logistics and local institutions can work together across settlements.
