Madhya Pradesh has transferred ₹36.17 crore in bonus payments to 9,04,126 tendu leaf collectors for the 2024 collection season. Beneficiaries include collectors from forest divisions in Mandla, Seoni, Balaghat, Dindori and Jabalpur. The state has indicated that more than 21 lakh tendu collectors will receive a combined bonus exceeding ₹139 crore.

Tendu-leaf collection is an important seasonal source of cash income for many tribal and forest-dependent families. The immediate significance of the transfer is household liquidity, but total expenditure provides only a partial picture of livelihood impact.

More useful indicators include collection days per household, quantity collected, base procurement payment, average bonus per collector, payment timing and the proportion of annual household income derived from forest produce. Gender-disaggregated information is also important because women frequently participate substantially in collection.

A second development issue concerns value addition. Where forest produce leaves a district as an unprocessed raw commodity, local communities capture a smaller share of final market value. The longer-term question is therefore whether forest-based livelihoods become more productive and diversified while sustainable resource management is maintained.
