The FAO Food Price Index reached 136.0 points in September, up 1.5% from August and 5.8% from a year earlier, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The index tracks international prices of a basket of food commodities; it does not measure the exact prices paid by households in every country.

Cereal prices rose 5.1% month on month and sugar prices 6.1%, FAO reported. Weather concerns and transport disruptions contributed to market pressure. The latest movement matters for food-importing countries and for public budgets where governments subsidize staple foods, although local prices also depend on currencies, taxes, harvests and distribution costs.

Case detail

The commodity breakdown shows why a single headline index does not describe every food market. Wheat quotations increased 6.3% in a month and maize 5.6%, while the all-rice index rose 1.4%. By contrast, meat prices declined 1.1% and dairy prices edged down 0.1%.

FAO linked cereal pressure to Black Sea logistics, weather concerns and uncertainty over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. For sugar, the agency cited production concerns in Thailand and India, heavy rain in Brazil and reduced sugar-beet planting in the European Union. These are explanations of international quotations, rather than measurements of household expenditure. The contrasting movements also mean that changes in a country's import bill will depend on the commodities it purchases.

Evidence and delivery status

FAO forecasts global cereal production of 2,979 million tonnes in 2026, 2.1% below 2025 but still the second-largest harvest on record. It also forecasts cereal trade of 505.8 million tonnes in 2026/27, down 3.5%. These are outlooks for production and trade. The observed September price index does not establish how much retail food prices have risen in any individual country.

Food prices moved unevenly

Bar chart of September 2026 changes from August: sugar plus 6.1 percent, cereals plus 5.1, all food commodities plus 1.5, vegetable oils plus 0.9, dairy minus 0.1 and meat minus 1.1.

The all-food figure is a weighted basket index. Commodity categories are not additive.
