The Republic of Korea has provided $5 million to the World Food Programme for food and nutrition assistance to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, WFP announced on 1 October. The contribution is intended to support more than 462,000 refugees over 12 months. That reach is a plan for future delivery, not a count of people already served with the new funds.
WFP says roughly 1.2 million Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh depend on humanitarian assistance. Maintaining food access is a continuing challenge in the camps, where families have limited opportunities to earn independent incomes. Nutrition services are particularly important for children and other vulnerable groups. The new contribution will cover a share of needs rather than the entire refugee population or all programme costs.
Case detail
The planned activities make the funding's purpose more specific. WFP intends to provide food assistance through e-vouchers for approximately 164,000 vulnerable refugees, nutrition assistance for about 36,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women, and specialized nutritious food for around 2,500 women. It also plans school meals for 260,000 children at learning centres.
These programme categories should not be added into an independent total without checking overlap and the agency's coverage definitions. The contribution supports the second phase of Korea's REACH humanitarian initiative. WFP identifies Cox's Bazar and Bhasan Char as locations where refugees depend on assistance. The package combines household food access, maternal nutrition and children's meals; none of the activity targets is a verified delivery count for the new contribution.
Evidence and delivery status
The planned reach covers more than 462,000 refugees over twelve months, within a population of roughly 1.2 million dependent on assistance. The funding meets a share of ongoing needs. WFP's announcement confirms the contribution and planned activities, while their actual delivery and sustained coverage remain to be reported.
