The State of the FPO Sector 2026 report, released by the National Association for Farmer Producer Organisations with NABARD, recorded more than 49,800 registered farmer producer entities across over 600 districts in 35 states and Union Territories. Around 97% were incorporated in 2016 or later. Maharashtra accounted for more than 18,000, Uttar Pradesh over 7,900 and Madhya Pradesh over 2,500.
Approximately 91% of farmer producer companies had paid-up capital below ₹5 lakh. In a survey of 420 FPOs across 12 states, only 30% reported receiving bank loans. Older companies formed before 2021 had median paid-up capital of approximately ₹5 lakh, compared with ₹1 lakh for those incorporated later.
Among the 420 surveyed FPOs, 49% reported profits without government or promoting-institution support, 45% reported profits with such support, and 6% reported losses. The report also surveyed 170 women-led FPOs: over 80% had more than 600 members, while roughly 90% relied predominantly on cereal-based value chains.
The report separately noted that e-NAM had enrolled more than 4,700 FPOs across a network of 1,656 mandis. These figures describe registration, finance and reported business results; they are not measures of changes in every member farmer's income.
