The tradition of publishing Sharadiya Sankhya or Durga Puja special magazines has been a unique cultural practice in Bengal since the late 19th century. The very first Sharadiya Sankhya was published in 1872 by Keshab Chandra Sen’s weekly newspaper, Sulabh Samachar. This started the tradition of releasing special literary editions during the Durga Puja season, which later gained popularity among other periodicals like Sadhana, Bharatbarsha, and Anandabazar Patrika. These Sharadiya editions were not just magazines but a reflection of the vibrant literary and cultural heritage of Bengal. They brought together some of the most celebrated writers of the time, including icons like Rabindranath Tagore, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, and later on, Satyajit Ray. In fact, several of the greatest Bengali literary works were first published in these magazines, making them a launchpad for authors and a treasure trove for readers. The Puja Sankhya tradition has endured despite changes in readership patterns and the impact of modern technology. The annual releases are still considered a high point in the literary calendar, drawing in readers from across generations, both in West Bengal and the global Bengali diaspora.
