A field-based agricultural-extension programme in Pughoboto sub-division of Nagaland has brought researchers from Nagaland University's School of Agricultural Sciences together with local farmers at a Model Demonstration Farm.

Around 40 farmers from Pughoboto and Mishilimi, together with village representatives from nearby settlements, participated. The programme was organised through the university's Farmers' Cell and agricultural research projects in collaboration with the Sub-Divisional Planning and Development Board.

The scale is modest compared with statewide extension systems, but the approach offers a useful model for understanding how agricultural knowledge moves from research institutions to farms. A demonstration farm allows producers to observe practices and crop performance under local conditions rather than relying only on classroom-style training or printed advisories.

The next stage will determine whether the programme produces measurable effects. Indicators should include how many farmers adopt demonstrated practices, area under those practices, input-cost changes, yield differences, crop diversification and farm income. The model becomes most valuable when demonstration, extension, inputs and marketing are linked.
